THE WALTZ OF DEVIL'S CREEK BOOK BLAST

THE WALTZ OF DEVIL'S CREEK

Justine Carver
Historical Fiction

Judith Campbell is dying, and she cannot take the painful truth about where her son came from to the grave with her. While on her deathbed in Atlanta, Georgia in 1994, Judith tells him the tragic story of his conception, and which of two men his birth father could be: the young man who professed his love to her, or the pastor who assaulted her.

Set in the Deep South in 1947, The Waltz of Devil's Creek digs into the dark crevices of racism and women's rights during a heated political climate in an era of segregation. Combined with Judith's lack of social stature, and at a time when reporting sexual assault was unheard of, every injustice is stacked against her from the very beginning.

But there is a light in Judith's young life: her best friend, Joseph Bird, who has loved her since childhood. Joseph stands up for Judith when no one else will and proves that even in the darkest of times, a light is always burning.

“But Mrs. Bird,” I said, looking over at her, “God don’t want people like Pastor Allman.”

She just looked at me for a moment, and then a smile slowly lit up her eyes again.

“YOU COME ON OUT HERE BIRD!”

The voice snapped Mrs. Bird and me from our moment, our heads simultaneously jerking toward the living room.

When we heard Joseph’s feet stomping against the floor as he ran down the hallway, Mrs. Bird and I dropped the dishtowel and the plate and hurried out of the kitchen.

“YOU GET YER DUMB ASS OUT HERE!” a second voice shouted, “OR WE’RE COMIN’ IN TO GET YOU!”

“That’s the Woodson brothers,” I told Joseph’s momma.

“Don’t you go out there,” she warned him as he thrust his big feet into his shoes. “I mean it, Joseph, don’t you go out that door!”

He flung the front door open anyway, and before he could step outside, the Woodson brothers jumped on him in the doorway.

“Joseph!” I screamed.

“Get out of my house!” his momma shrieked.

The whole house shook as the three fought; a small table underneath the window beside the door fell over, shattering the flower vase atop it; fists swung and legs kicked, and cuss words flew.

“You little piece of shit, you burned up my truck!” said the blonde-haired brother.

“I’m gonna kick your nuts right up yer throat!” said the brown-haired one. “What tha hell were you thinkin’ boy?!” Thwap! When his fist pulled back, his knuckles glistened with Joseph’s blood.

“Let go of him! Let go! Let gooo!” I dug all ten of my fingernails into the blonde’s arm, trying to stop him from pulling Joseph out of the house.

His momma was on the other side, screaming as she worked, unsuccessfully, to beat them off with a broom. The blonde shoved me away, and I fell onto my butt on the porch as they dragged Joseph down the steps and into the front yard.

“Don’t you touch my son!” Mrs. Bird roared, and the broom came down hard on the brown-haired one’s back.

He whirled around, seemingly unfazed by the blow, and yanked the broom from her hands and tossed it.

They nearly beat Joseph unconscious.

Mrs. Bird ran next door and called Sheriff Woodson, but he never showed; he’d stayed out of all the incidents between Joseph and his sons. But Joseph wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Thanks for this interview, Joni.  Congratulations on your new book! Would you say it’s been a rocky road for you in regards to getting your book written and published or pretty much smooth sailing?  Can you tell us about your journey?

This book has had a bumpy road. It took me an extra round of editing before I was happy with it. The ebook loaded up fine but the cover on the print version wouldn’t work. I called Amazon and they weren’t much help. It took my book cover designer days to get it right. After that, Amazon put another halt on my book, questioning whether my contributors were right. I got that resolved and the print version finally went live.

If you were to pen your own autobiography, what might the title be?

“Better Late Than Never” I started writing late in life.

When not writing, what do you like to do for relaxation and/or fun?

I like to exercise—yoga, walking, and swimming as well as reading. And I enjoy watching sports on TV.

What makes your book stand out from the rest?

I’ve got to admit I pushed the fantasy envelope in the last few books. In this one, not only have I included Hades, the Greek god of the Underworld, his brother, Poseidon, god of the Sea, but also a Sea Sprite, a mermaid, and some of her friends as well as a cast of mortals and Elves.

Can you give us the very first page of your book so that we can get a glimpse inside?

Rejected…angry…confused…depressed…Alex’s attempt to return home to Eledon to be with her Elf family and friends had failed and she remained stranded in the mortal world. No, the correct term was exiled.

Nothing seemed to improve her mood, not even signing a one-year contract to work as a model for Suzette, an up-and-coming fashion designer at a London studio.

Suzette tried to help her state of mind by dragging her to a disco to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Miranda, Suzette’s former model, was in town for a few days and invited some close friends to join her celebration. Alex didn’t know her and wanted to decline, but Suzette insisted. So here they were, staring at the crowd on the dance floor.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of bodies gyrated to the rhythm of the same musical heartbeat. The place oozed with humans and the music was so loud, Alex could feel her heart pumping in time with the music. Instantly, she felt like she belonged to the same musical organism that had taken over the dance floor. This was her first time in a nightclub—it was called the Factory, the newest hangout in London.

They stored their winter coats and purses in a room to the side where Alex could speak to Suzette but she still had to shout over the music. “I thought you said this party was for close friends of Miranda. There must be thousands of people here.”

“Oh, you know how it is, love. One person invites another and another. The next thing you know, you have this. Come on, let’s join the fun.” She beckoned Alex to the dance floor.

Alex didn’t know how to dance to this music, so she copied Suzette’s moves, raising her hands over her head and wriggling her hips, feeling somewhat silly. Abruptly, the lighting changed—Suzette’s blue hair stood out like a glowing lamp and Alex’s white blouse changed to purple.

If your book was put in the holiday section of the store, what holiday would that be and why?

Patriot’s Day. Even though Alex has been exiled to the mortal world, she risks her life by going back home to Eledon to thwart an attack on her homeland. Only a patriot would be willing to risk that.

Would you consider turning your book into a series or has that already been done?

It’s already part of a series. It’s the third book in the Admiralty Archives.

When you were young, did you ever see writing as a career or full-time profession?

Never.

Did any of your books get rejected by publishers?

No, but I was rejected by several agents. For the last several years, I’ve been working with Village Green Press LLC, a small indie press.

What is your view on co-authoring books; have you done any?

It’s not for me.

What’s next for you?

I’m writing another series to follow this one called the Epsilon Account. The main character, Alex, remains the same but the situation changes. Alex will be helping the Elves with the Golden Harvest, a payment in gold to their Mentors for living on Eledon. But she encounters so many problems, I made a four-book series out of it.

If home is where the heart is, the warrior Lady Alexin is very far from home, indeed. Banished from her home in the Elven realm of Eledon to the mortal world of near future London, and robbed of her magic, she has no choice but to try and find a place in a world where she doesn’t fit in. Yet for all their peculiarities, the mortals have not been unkind; she has a new career as a high fashion runway model, her very own flat in a posh section of town and a host of opportunities to socialize with a variety of admirers, including a handsome Detective Inspector from Scotland Yard.

Yet nothing but her former training as a tracker and assassin could have prepared her for the discovery that beautiful young Elven women are being kidnapped and trafficked as slaves into the mortal world by the notorious Rock Elves, working with the white supremacist 23rd Infantry–an unholy alliance led by Alex’s old nemesis, Sawgrass. As the truth unravels her mission is clear–a call from home she cannot allow to go unanswered, even if it means her life.

Prologue

Fire snaked into his lungs. Suffocating. Debilitating. He couldn’t breathe, his body immobile. He clawed at the air, at the coarse rope binding his feet, at everything his hands managed to reach. Why were his hands free?

Is this how someone feels when they burn?

Helios promised him there would be consequences. It had only been one more fire, one more kill. He had craved it more than he feared Helios’s warning.

One more mistake.

Smoke curled upward from the flames, dancing up the walls in a seductive swirl of lights and sound. The crackling of gunshots echoed somewhere beyond the steel door.

No chance of escape.

He didn’t deserve to die this way. His scream lodged deep in his lungs, so deep it burned his insides. A round of hacking coughs escaped his scorched lips. He desperately wanted water or a beer. Yes, when he got out of this—if he made it—he’d down a whole six-pack of Bud Light and thank whatever powers that be for his salvation.

I’ll be good. If you let me live, God, I’ll be good forever.

Did he hear his name coming back to him from the darkness beyond the flames? Yes, but from where, exactly?

Damian.

It’s only in my head. No. No, no, no!

He heard shouts, or was fear mocking him? He yanked at the ropes around his ankles and brought away flesh covered in his own blood. Why couldn’t he move?

The door pounded. No, someone pounded on the door. The blaze caressed the floor around him, moving closer with a lover’s passion, inch by inch. He heard the loud crash this time and was certain someone stood on the other side of the door. A gust of air whooshed into the room and the fire found new life. It tormented him, licked his skin. A scream escaped, louder now because of the burn. Two strong bodies in masks lifted him away from the center of the inferno. His eyes remained opened, even as the sensation of floating carried him away from the chamber. He’d promised to be good and he would be. No man or woman or creature walking the earth could claim to be so good as he from this moment on and into forever.

Darkness consumed his whispered thanks while a cacophony of sirens trumpeted his fall into oblivion.

Q: What’s inside the mind of a mystery author?

There's always a story swirling around in there. Somewhere from the beginning of a crime to its ultimate resolution. When I'm writing I have to focus on the story intensely while I'm writing and then try and completely shut off when I'm done for the day. Not easily done, however, and many nights I'm creeping back downstairs to add a few more sentences or twists as they come to me.

Q: Tell us why readers should buy A PERFECT STORM?

A Perfect Storm is the latest book in the award-winning Sgt. Windflower Mystery series set in the beautiful little town of Grand Bank on the eastern tip of Canada. There are mysteries deaths and accidents, but there is also food, fun and great friends. It’s a clean cozy-like police procedural designed to warm your heart on a cool autumn evening.

Q: What makes a good mystery?

The twist is the main secret to a great mystery. That, and a great storyline with believable characters that people can relate to. They don't have to be like them, just believable.

Q: Where can readers find out more about you and your work?

Q: What has writing taught you?
Humility and patience. The humility to recognize that I am only a messenger. I connect to the creative current and the characters come and tell the story. Patience to wait for the story to come before I start writing it down.

Sgt. Windflower is back, untangling another swirling mystery, this one bringing the meth crisis and biker gangs to the quiet Newfoundland town of Grand Bank, feeling the sting of their deadly tentacles reaching all the way from Las Vegas.  He’s working with his familiar crew of RCMP characters – but wait, are some of the faces changing? New challenges for Jones, an unknown side of Smithson reveals itself, and what ever happened to Tizzard?  In the midst of putting the pieces of the puzzle together, Windflower and his beloved Sheila also find themselves navigating sorrows and surprises on the family front.

Come back to Grand Bank for more fun, food and cool, clean, Canadian crime fiction with Sgt. Windflower Mysteries.

Author Interview: A.S. Fenichel Author of MISLEADING A DUKE

A.S. Fenichel gave up a successful career in New York City to follow her husband to Texas and pursue her lifelong dream of being a professional writer. She’s never looked back.

A.S. adores writing stories filled with love, passion, desire, magic and maybe a little mayhem tossed in for good measure. Books have always been her perfect escape and she still relishes diving into one and staying up all night to finish a good story.

Multi-published in historical, paranormal, erotic and contemporary romance, A.S. is the author of the several series, including Forever Brides, Everton Domestic Society, Wallflowers of West Lane and more. Strong, empowered heroines from Regency London to modern-day New Orleans are what really excites A.S., and that’s what you’ll find in all her books.

A Jersey Girl at heart, she now makes her home in Southern Missouri with her real-life hero, her wonderful husband. When not reading or writing, she enjoys cooking, travel, history, puttering in her garden and spoiling her fussy cat.

As a book bloggin’ and book luvin’ Princess, I’m always curious to find out how authors got the ideas for their books.  Can you tell us how you got the idea to write your book?

I wanted to write a series where the friendships between women were explored. I wanted to show how deeply women can care for one another and how fiercely protective we are.

In Misleading A Duke, Faith is determined to discover her fiancé’s secrets and her friends are willing to help her or help her refuse to marry a duke forced on her by her parents.

Can you tell us a little about the main characters of your book?

Nick is a “retired” English spy. He has a lot of secrets. He’s also the Duke of Breckenridge and not used to people questioning his authority.

Faith is angry that she is being pushed toward a man she knows nothing about and she would rather be ruined than married to a monster like her friend Aurora was. So, she devises a plan to ferret out his secrets.

Oh! And there’s a puppy!

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would that be?

Just hang in there. It’s all going to work out, but it’s going to take a while.

What would you say is one of your interesting writing quirks?

I love the empty page. I love that moment before I put a single word on the page and the possibilities are endless.

I also move around a lot. I write on a laptop and will sit on the porch, the couch in the living room, my bed or almost anywhere but at my desk to write.

Do you hear from your readers?  What do they say?

Sometimes, and I love it. Some write to tell me how much they loved a particular book. Some write to tell me they hated something that happened in a scene. I get the occasional question about why I did something to a character. I just tell that person that I only write the book, what happens in it is out of my hands.

What is the toughest criticism given to you as an author?

I never look at it this way. If someone has taken the time to try to help me, I see it as a compliment. They must have seen something in the writing to make it worth their while to try to help.

What has been your best accomplishment?

Getting published at all is a huge accomplishment. It’s not easy to write a book. It’s not easy to stick with one thing long enough to finish an entire book. Getting published is beyond hard, at least it was for me.

Do you Google yourself?

Never. Let me know if you find anything. LOL

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

I think there are five unpublished but finished books and maybe another handful of starts that never got finished.

Fun question – if you were princess or prince, what’s one thing you would do to make your kingdom a better place?

Everyone would be required to walk in someone else’s shoes for a full day.

Do you have anything specific that you would like to say to your readers?

My readers are so wonderful. I thank them for loving the books, for waiting for the next one and for keeping me on their TBR lists.

Thanks to the Book Blogging Princess for letting me spend some time with you.
